A fiatal Pierre Aronax különös elmélettel lepi meg tudóstársait egyik előadásán. Az utóbbi időszakban több hajó esett áldozatul egy különös szörnynek a nyílt tengeren. Az ifjabb Aronax professzor úgy gondolja, hogy ismeri a különös élőlény titkát. Tudóstársai - édesapja vezetésével - gúnyt űznek a fiatalemberből, aki úgy dönt, itt az ideje, hogy maga induljon el felkutatni a szörnyet. Nem is sejti, hogy a kisgyermekkora óta kísértő rémálmai hamarosan valóra válnak...
