Miló-t, az ifjú nyelvészt nemcsak tudományos szempontból érdekli Atlantisz, az elsüllyedt birodalom rejtélye. Nagyapja is szenvedélyesen kutatta az ókori csoda titkát, és állítólag nyomára is jutott a megoldásnak: birtokában volt az Atlantisz minden titkát rejtő könyv. Whitmore, a különc milliomos hisz a legendának, ezért veszi be expedíciójába a habókos tudóst. A szakértőkből és kalandorokból verbuvált csapat egy óriás tengeralattjárón indul útnak, és titokzatos hajótörése után sem adja fel: ember nem járta víz alatti tájakon halad végső célja felé.
Számtalan csodálatos kaland után, Milo segítségével a kis csapat eljut Atlantiszra, de nem romokat talál, hanem egy csodás királyságot. Milo összebarátkozik Kida hercegnővel, és amikor rájön, hogy társai nem is tudományos céllal érkeztek ide, elhatározza, hogy megmenti a tengermélyi birodalmat. Ha nem elég okos, Atlantisz talán tényleg legendává válik...
