Batman már két éve rója Gotham City utcáit, és üldözi a város gonosztevőit – így hát egyre mélyebbre merül a sikátorok sötétségébe. Már alig néhány emberben bízhat; mindenfelől korrupt hivatalnokok és romlott nagymenők veszik körül. Egy gyilkos épp Gotham elitjét veszi célba, és a szadista machinációi után hátrahagyott titokzatos nyomok a világ legnagyobb detektívjét a város alvilágába vezetik. Ott találkozik Selina Kyle-lal, vagyis Macskanővel, Oswald Cobblepottal, a Pingvinnel, Carmine Falcone-nal és Edward Nashtonnal, Rébusszal. A bizonyítékok azonban a saját otthona felé vezetik, és minél jobban szűkül a gyanúsítottak köre, annál félelmetesebbé válik ellenfele.
